Marijuana Research at the University of Mississippi

Joining forces with eight other Democratic senators, Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has written a letter that strongly encourages our federal health and drug officials to cultivate a less restrictive path for vital government-funded studies on the marijuana plant – hoping to focus on the long ignored positive aspects.

Looking to address the massive “data shortfall” on the helpful characteristics of the plants many cannabinoids, Sen. Warren wrote that, “It is important that we make a concerted effort to understand how this drug works and how it can best serve patients through appropriate methods of use and doses, like any other prescribed medicine.”

Pleading for common sense on the behalf of the American populace, Sen. Warren ‘s letter was fired off to the heads of HHS (the Department of Health and Human Services), the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration), and the misguided officials at the Office of National Drug Control Policy – the primary governmental bodies that have restricted marijuana-related research.

Although the federal government doesn’t outright prohibit scientific research on marijuana and its cannabinoids, its current classification as a “schedule 1 narcotic” has made research of the plant’s compounds virtually impossible to study in the US.

Thanks to its odious schedule one classification, scientists are required to jump through complicated and daunting layers of bureaucracy when seeking approval to study the drug. As is currently mandated by our federal government, the University of Mississippi is the only Institute for higher learning that can legally cultivate medical marijuana for research in the US.
