Not long ago, I was having a conversation with the Attorney who represents NORML in Arizona, formerly the Director of Legal Affairs for NORML (National), Tom Dean. We were talking about a so-called “amendment” to the Arizona Medical Marijuana Act that had been added. Tom told me that regrettably, it was only going to be a matter of time before an unfortunate MMJ patient student was going to get caught up in this. Please see: A.R.S §15-108

Andree Lee Juwaun Maestas is that student. He is being charged for felony possession of marijuana for no more than 4 grams of marijuana found in his dorm room.

This is absolutely a violation of the Arizona Voter Protection Act, as Prop 203 passed by a majority of voters in 2010. Mr. Dean, has very keenly identified the lack of education to the Grand Jury with respect to the Constitutional protections in place for Mr. Maestas as an MMJ Patient in Arizona, and has filed a Motion to Dismiss.

We cannot allow legislative tampering to violate the rights of our patient students in Arizona. There was a reason that the Arizona Voter Protection Act of 1996 was enacted. That was to protect the intent of Voters and ensure that legislative tampering did not happen.

I implore each and every one of you to share this on your social media accounts. Make your voices heard. Stand up for Andree Maestas and his protected rights under the AMMA.
