Cannabis users know freedom isn’t free.
For 80yrs they have tried to hound and shame us. We have been taught to fear the knock at the door. Nationally, Attorney General Jeff Sessions makes no secret of his desire to destroy America’s cannabis industry. Here in Arizona, since 2010, some of us have enjoyed some sense of protection with the Arizona Medical Marijuana Act, but our community is still a target. Thirteen thousand arrested last year for possessing a plant. Every year at the state capitol we have to drive away a fresh round of attacks on the medical program and our freedom. Every day is a fight.
And that’s why Arizona NORML is here: to be here, every year, to keep up the fight. Just like the national organization, Arizona NORML works with legislators, industry leaders and local activists to be sure the cannabis consuming public has a seat at the table. Since 1991, Arizona NORML has done everything in our power to advance the rights of cannabis users and been part of every major fight for cannabis rights in the state. From the original 1996 Prop200 campaign and challenging the marijuana tax stamps, to Prop203 in 2010, to 2016’s Prop205 effort, Arizona NORML is part of the team.
But we are not just about an initiative every now and then. For the past five years we have been working at the state capitol, looking out for you. This year we were 4 for 4 in stopping bad bills before they became law; and key players in good bill’s like Rep Pam Powers-Hannley’s HB2400, a bill to lower medical card costs, and Sen Sonny Borrelli’s SB1337, the hemp bill that made it all the way to the governor’s office. We are already working with state legislators and other stakeholders on next session’s bills for hemp and medical cannabis testing.
More than that, Arizona NORML travels the state promoting cannabis projects and educating the public on the truth about cannabis and its prohibition. We provide and distribute thousands of pieces of cannabis information. We hold monthly meetings in PHX and support local groups in all four corners of the state. Our 24-hour hotline helps folks with everything from what to do and who to call when arrested, to court support, to learning more about the cannabis businesses in your area. And none of this can be done for free. Phones cost, websites cost, gas costs, printing costs.
Arizona NORML exists because of people like you. Generous donations keep us afloat and improve the overall political climate on cannabis in our state until we make it legal once and for all. The enemies of cannabis are always working against us. We need to be ready for the fight.
